Yeah, That’ll Work…

Seriously. It’s come to this:

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (AP) — A candidate for state superintendent of schools said Thursday he wants thick used textbooks placed under every student’s desk so they can use them for self-defense during school shootings.

Go here for the rest of the story.

I just don’t know what to say….

A CANDIDATE. He *wants* the job — that says nothing about his sanity or the quality of his ideas.

  2. So, basically, the potential uses the book in some sort of Ninja slo-mo way to anticipate where bullets might hit and makes sure the book is placed exactly right? Or do they just cover themselves in books? Maybe I just don’t get it. And I hope he doesn’t either. The job, I mean. What an asshat.

There is a school in Texas that is training children to be pro-active if someone comes into their classroom with the intent of doing them harm. Actually,a thick book will go a lot further in a childs protection than lining up and waiting to receive a bullet in the back of the head. It is a sad day that it has come to this but children don’t need to be raised as fodder for some nutcase.

  4. I so want to send this to the Mythbusters to see if they’ll tell us if it’s a crock or not. At least he admits that it stops pistol bullets but not rifle ones. I’m envisioning a ton of children in this program doing stupid things with found guns and old phone books in the near future and not a lot of kids protecting themselves in a school shooting.

I don’t believe that the point of having the books is for a form of body armor as much as having a tool for disorienting the assailant by throwing them. Theoretically, this will give children time to escape. I think it is absolutely tragic that children should be learning this shit but I think, given the reality of things. Admittedly, this may be a suck-ass idea, but until someone comes up with something better….

  6. According to the article Chili linked to it is actually used to block a bullet. Apparently the textbook in question blocked pistol shot but not rifle. Which is what makes me want to have the Mythbusters check it out because they’ll tell us exactly how thick the book would have to be, how far away the shooter would have to be, etc. for it to make sense.

  7. Do we know how to submit a myth to the Busters? I think that’d be COOL!

I’m still astounded that some asshat come up with this as a viable idea to deal with this problem.

  8. What is also so galling is that this is a viable conversation topic AT ALL. Will they train the students on effective blocking and/or throwing techniques? What about the counseling for those students who worry about A. whether it will ever happen and B. what if they don’t do it right. Doesn’t this sound like satire? Why not body armor? How about we stop the GUNS in this flipping country!! Apologies for soapboxing, but this is INSANE!!

  9. Supposedly you can do it on the mythbusters site. I think you go on the message boards. But posting to the message boards involves registering which plays into my ridiculous aversion to registering for a bunch of stuff so I haven’t checked it out specifically.
